Open Science Strategy: Code Review with Dr Anusha Vable

Hosted by the LSE Health

Online (Zoom webinar)

Speaker

Dr Anusha Vable, ScD, MPH

Dr Anusha Vable, ScD, MPH

Associate Professor at University of California San Francisco

Dr Anusha Vable joined us for a seminar with the Health Inequalities lab to discuss strategies for open science.

Programming for data wrangling and statistical analysis is crucial in modern epidemiology, yet formal training in optimizing code quality is often limited. Coding mistakes can lead to invalid research claims, reducing the field's credibility. Implementing code review, a technique from the software industry, can improve scientific accuracy, reduce stress, accelerate learning, foster team building, and establish best practices. This talk highlighted the importance of code review and provide recommendations for successful implementation in research laboratories, for code authors, and code reviewers. Dr Vable outlined feasible strategies for code review implementation, emphasizing its critical role in ensuring scientific reproducibility.

Meet the speaker

Dr. Anusha Vable, ScD, MPH, is an Associate Professor at UCSF and a distinguished Social Epidemiologist. She leads VabLab, a prominent research team dedicated to identifying and advocating for structural solutions to health inequities. VabLab employs a range of methodologies, from basic linear regression with interaction terms to advanced techniques for identifying causal effects in epidemiology and econometrics, as well as sequence analysis to uncover patterns in variables over time. Their research primarily focuses on socioeconomic factors, particularly education, and diseases associated with aging.

LSE Health Inequalities Lab

The Health Inequalities Lab is a research group based at LSE Health. Our team is dedicated to studying and addressing the impact of social inequalities on health outcomes and health care service use. Our approach is interdisciplinary: we bring together insights from epidemiology, biology, social policy and econometrics. Our aim is to build the evidence base for interventions to reduce social inequalities in health over the lifecourse. We are supported by a range of national and international funders, including the European Research Council (UKRI guarantee), UK Research and Innovation, US National Institute on Aging, Medical Research Council, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Administrative Data Research UK and  the French National Research Agency.

LSE holds a wide range of events, covering many of the most controversial issues of the day, and speakers at our events may express views that cause offence. The views expressed by speakers at LSE events do not reflect the position or views of The London School of Economics and Political Science.

From time to time there are changes to event details so we strongly recommend checking back on this listing on the day of the event if you plan to attend.
