LSE Law doctoral students present research on UK subsidy control

Monday 12 October 2026

Two LSE Law School doctoral students, Ioanna Kladi and Jesús María Calderón Argüello, have presented their research on the UK’s subsidy control regime at a workshop organised by the European Union Delegation to the United Kingdom in London.

The study, commissioned by the EU Delegation under the direction of Professor Pablo Ibáñez Colomo, examines the effectiveness of the UK Subsidy Control Act, three years into its enforcement.

The report tests the literature’s predictions on the topic against a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analysis of all Subsidy Advice Unit’s Reports and Competition Appeal Tribunal’s cases to date, in an effort to identify all potential shortcomings that could affect competition and trade between the EU and the UK, but also domestically.

The workshop brought together experts from private practice, academia, the judiciary and the UK government to discuss the findings and the potential evolution of the UK’s subsidy control regime.
