To coincide with the visit of Professor Miranda Stewart to the LSE, the Department of Law is delighted to announce a special LSE Taxation Seminar on Tuesday 11 February 2020 entitled, 'Still Unequal: Gender, Tax and Welfare in Australia'

From the bottom to the top of the tax and welfare system, women are still unequal. This talk explores how these policy fields interact in a way that continues to disadvantage women. Drawing on tax data analysis and tax-transfer system modelling, it shows how the interaction of tax, welfare, market and family perpetuates gender inequality – and how gender inequality contributes to broader income and wealth inequalities in Australia. Finally, it asks what can be done systemically to empower women economically and improve economic and social outcomes for Australia.

To examine these isssues further, Miranda will be joined by two guest speakers: Tasneem Kadiri, the UK and Ireland Tax Director at L’Oréal and Fran Bennett from the University of Oxford and Women’s Budget Group.
