Research opportunities at the LSE Centre for Research on Contemporary Greece & Cyprus - Hellenic Observatory

We are seeking to appoint up to three pre-doctoral Research Assistants to support several planned and ongoing research projects at the Hellenic Observatory. Appointments will be on an hourly-paid part-time basis for an initial period of up to four months (until end of August 2026), possibly leading to a full-time pre-doc position for the 2026/27 academic year (subject to satisfactory progression and availability of funds). Any future appointment would be subject to a separate process and applicable approvals.

The successful candidate(s) will be assigned to one or more projects under the supervision of Prof Vassilis Monastiriotis, Director of the LSE Centre for Research on Contemporary Greece & Cyprus - “Hellenic Observatory” and will be expected to work both collaboratively and independently. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the rental housing market, AI and employment, wage discrimination, financial literacy, firm productivity, state subsidies and regional growth. Main research tasks will include data processing and analysis (including application of micro-econometric and counterfactual econometric techniques), preparation of presentations/reports and possibly some bibliographic research and support with survey design and implementation.

Applicants should have prior work experience in research projects, strong data skills and good working knowledge of applied econometrics and relevant specialist software (Stata, R, Python). Familiarity with AI tools will be an advantage. At least one of the appointees will be involved in the analysis of regional data, for which familiarity with – or ability to learn quickly – basic GIS tools is essential.

Interested candidates should send the following to hellenicobservatory.research@lse.ac.uk:

(i) a copy of their CV;

(ii) a short cover letter (maximum one page of A4) outlining their research experience and skills; and

(iii) a sample of code writing (for example, from a past project or dissertation).

Applications will remain open until the position(s) have been filled. The review process will begin on 15 May. Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr George Melios (G.Melios@lse.ac.uk).

Applicants are required to have the right to work in the UK at the time of appointment. Please be aware that visa sponsorship is not available for these roles.
