Central Banking for the Climate Age
We are delighted to launch the Central Banking for the Climate Age in partnership with Green Central Banking in Autumn Term 2026 and Winter Term 2027.
Project background
The project will support Green Central Banking in its policy research and editorial work. Green Central Banking is a digital media organisation covering research and policy proposals on the role of finance in addressing the climate and environmental crisis, with a focus on supporting central bankers and financial supervisors in the transition to a post-carbon economy.
The project gives LSE students participating in the Clinic the opportunity to contribute to Green Central Banking’s research and publications, engage with reporters and editors, and develop their understanding of the role of central banks and financial regulators in climate action.
What will students explore?
Students will work across three research strands:
- Strand A: Explore the legal, institutional and operational mechanisms through which central banks can establish, expand and protect climate-related mandates.
- Strand B: Examine what the European Central Bank and European national central banks, can learn from international counterparts.
- Strand C: Explore what the European Central Bank and European national central banks can learn from more constrained or contested examples about embedding and defending a climate-related mandate.
What will students learn?
Through the project, students will develop their understanding of:
- The legal and institutional role of central banks and financial regulators in addressing climate change.
- Different approaches to establishing and implementing climate-related mandates.
- International approaches to central banking and climate action.
- How to translate academic and policy research into accessible journalistic content.
Project outputs
Students will contribute to Green Central Banking’s research and work output and will have the opportunity to publish the results of their investigations. As part of the project, they will also develop their research communication skills by translating their findings into a journalistic op-ed format.
