Capitalism, democracy and the state: on the radical legacy of Claus Offe

Hosted by the Ralph Miliband Programme Programme
In-person public event (Old Theatre, Old Building)
Wednesday 4 March 2026 6.30pm - 8pm

What structural constraints does capitalism impose on politics? How can the capitalist state maintain democratic legitimacy? Engaging with Prof Claus Offe’s work on the limits of the state and the crisis of democracy is more urgent today than ever.

In this unique event of the Ralph Miliband series, we discuss the generative work of political sociologist and founding member of the Hertie School Claus Offe. Join us for a stimulating conversation with Prof Lea Ypi, Prof Albena Azmanova and Prof Peter Wagner, as they discuss the legacy of Prof Claus Offe in this special commemorative event.
