Mediate the middle: moving with and beyond dichotomies

Join us in celebrating the launch of Bart Cammaerts’ latest textbook, Dichotomies in Media and Communication Theory — a bold and original exploration of the key theoretical tensions that shape our media landscape.

This innovative book introduces students and scholars to eight central dichotomies—such as private/public, control/freedom, and virtual/real—revealing their significance in understanding media, communication, and power in contemporary society. By examining both sides of each pair and their complex interrelations, Professor Cammaerts offers a fresh framework for engaging with critical theory and the democratic importance of media.

Meet our speakers and chair

Bart Cammaerts is Professor of Politics and Communication in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE. He is the former chair of the Communication and Democracy Section of the European Communication and Research Association (ECREA). His most recent publication is The Circulation of Anti-Austerity Protest.

Robin Mansell (@Robin_Mansellx) is Professor of New Media and the Internet in the Department of Media and Communications at the LSE. Her research and teaching focus on media and communications regulation and policy, internet governance, privacy and surveillance, digital platforms, the socio-technical features of data and information systems, and the social, political and economic impacts of innovation in digital networks and applications.

Ellen Helsper (@EllenHel) is Professor of Digital Inequalities in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE.
