Behind every algorithm lies a set of choices, some visible, many not. This panel discusses the unseen forces that shape AI, focusing on how gender bias enters systems through data, design, and deployment.

Hear from leading researchers and policymakers as they unpack the consequences of biased inputs and explore what it takes to build AI that truly serves everyone.

Meet our speakers and chair

Alexandra "Ali" Cirone is an assistant professor in the School of Public Policy (SPP), and has a joint appointment in the Department of Government. She also holds a research appointment at the BI Norwegian Business School, and she is a non-resident fellow in the Democratic Innovations Program at Yale University ISPS. She is one of the editors and co-founders of Broadstreet.blog, a blog on historical political economy.

Carrie Friese is Associate Professor in Sociology in the Department of Sociology at LSE. Carrie’s research is located at the intersections of medical sociology/sociology of health and illness with science and technology studies using largely qualitative research methods. She has been an innovator of Situational Analysis, which is a methodological extension of grounded theory, with Adele Clarke and Rachel Washburn. Friese has a general interest in relational and mixed-methods research and more-than-human sociologies.

Elizabeth Stokoe joined the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at LSE in January 2023. Prior to this, she was Professor of Social Interaction in the Discourse and Rhetoric Group at Loughborough University where she was also Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for REF2021. She has been Academic Director of Impact at LSE since January 2024.
