The European Institute hosts workshop to discuss the policies and influence of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the European Union

On 15 May 2026, we convened the one-day workshop titled “Italy under Giorgia Meloni: a ‘vanguard’ in the management of migration and security challenges?,” which brought together academics and researchers to assess the influence of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’ migration strategy prioritising deterrence, externalised asylum processing, and repatriation - policies whose compliance with fundamental rights is debated – on other European governments and the European Union’s leadership.

A few of our students also had the opportunity to attend the closing roundtable chaired by Professor Danielle Albertazzi (University of Surrey), which discussed the mainstreaming of radical right ideas in migration and security policy in Europe, with Professor Tim Bale (Queen Mary University), Dr Caterina Mazzilli (ODI Global), and Dr Angelo Martelli, our Assistant Professor in European and International Political Economy.

Supported by the Political Studies Association Excellence and Impact Fund, the event was organised by the Italian Politics Specialist Group chaired by our Visiting Fellow Dr Marta Lorimer, in collaboration with the LSE European Institute.
