DSI teaching courses move to the Department of Methodology

Monday 10 August 2026

The Data Science Institute's undergraduate teaching courses will transfer to the Department of Methodology starting in the 2026/27 academic year.

These undergraduate courses are available to students from across the School as part of their degree programmes. They are designed to equip students with the skills, tools, and critical understanding needed to work with data in meaningful, responsible, and impactful ways, enabling them to apply data science methods and insights within their own fields of study and research.

As part of this transition, DS202A: Data Science for Social Scientists will become MY202A and will be taught in the Autumn Term. The course teaches students the practical use of machine learning techniques and their metrics, applied to relevant data sets. It is designed for students across any social science degree programmes. Students must have A-level maths or equivalent, and basic programming knowledge, preferably in Python or R, is highly recommended.

DS105W: Data for Data Science will become MY105W and will be taught in the Winter Term. The course teaches students how to transform, manipulate and analyse real data through a fully hands-on and practical approach. In this module, students will master reproducible data analysis with Python – and will have the freedom to select their own topics to research, using the skills learnt on this module to turn their questions into insights. It is designed for students across any social science degree programmes, and students with little or no experience in computer programming are welcome.

All other DSI undergraduate modules will be suspended for the 2026/27 academic year. More infor
