Regular Research Groups

The Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science hosts a variety of regular seminars on different areas of philosophy. These seminars bring leading scholars to London, as well as providing our own researchers with the opportunity to present their latest work.

All seminars are free and open to everyone - no registration is required. Seminars are usually held in our dedicated seminar room, LAK 2.06, in the Lakatos Building on the LSE campus.


Sigma Club

The Sigma Club is a historic lecture series on the philosophy and foundations of physics, founded in 1987 by Michael Redhead at Cambridge, and moved to LSE in 1997 where it is now hosted by the CPNSS. Choice Group

The LSE Choice Group is a group of philosophers, political scientists and economists based mainly at the LSE and with a shared interest in the theory of rational decision making in individuals and groups and its application to economic, political and social questions. The group meets on Wednesday evenings from 16:30 to 18:00. Please check our events page for more information and sign up to the Choice Group events newsletter.

Popper Seminar

The Popper Seminars are the continuation of the great lecture series convened by Karl Popper and later Imre Lakatos at LSE, throughout the entirety of their careers. Originally held every Tuesday at 2pm, the only day that Popper would come into the office, the Popper Seminar now continues to serve as the department’s principal lecture series, convening roughly once each month during regular term time. Conjectures and Refutations (Philosophy of Science)

Conjectures and Refutations is a seminar series for philosophers and scientists with a shared interest in the philosophy of science. The seminars cover topics in the philosophy of science broadly understood, with a special focus on general philosophy of science and those branches of science not already covered by the Choice Group and Sigma Club. Conjectures and Refutations is a venue for scientifically informed philosophy as well as philosophically informed science.

Law, Ethics & Justice (LEJ) Group

The LEJ Group hosts speakers who present the best new work in moral, political, and legal philosophy. They meet on Tuesday afternoons, 4:30pm. The seminar is followed by a visit to the pub. Social Epistemology Research Group (SERG)

The Social Epistemology Research Group (SERG) is part of the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science (CPNSS) at the London School of Economics. SERG explores the social dimensions of knowledge—how collective processes like deliberation, communication, and institutional structures influence what we know and how we come to know it.
