Connecting with LSE Alumni and Employers

Meeting people and hearing about their early professional careers can help you identify sectors and job roles that might interest you, as well as those that don't appeal to you. Throughout your time at LSE, there will be numerous opportunities to meet LSE alumni and employers on campus. Many of these events are scheduled in the evening or are less than an hour long, making them easier to fit around your other activities.

Speaking to alumni and employers can provide you with valuable information and support, including:

  • Insights into the daily working life of professionals
  • Honest accounts of both the positives and negatives of their careers
  • Information on pathways into different job roles and sectors
  • Ideas on the skills and experiences needed before applying
  • Increased commercial awareness through exposure to important themes impacting their sector
  • Tips on where to find opportunities and what to highlight in your applications

Additionally, connecting with these individuals might introduce you to new opportunities, or even lead to mentoring and coaching relationships.

Ways to connect with employers and alumni:

In addition to connecting with alumni at our dedicated departmental alumni events, here are some other places where you can engage with them.

LSE Careers Discover programmes These programmes offer opportunities to learn about different career options and approaches to early careers in various sectors, both in the UK and abroad. Many events within our Sector Discover Programmes feature 'Meet an Alum' sessions, where you can meet LSE alumni and hear about their experiences. For more information, please visit the Sector Discovery Programme pages.

Ask an Alum This tool connects you with your alumni community, allowing you to ask questions anytime, anywhere. For more information and to ask your questions, please visit Ask an Alum

LinkedIn for making and growing connections LinkedIn is a great way to expand your professional network by connecting with LSE alumni. Visit the LSE page on LinkedIn and explore the ‘Alumni’ tab to search for alumni to connect with. For more advice on using LinkedIn, please visit the LinkedIn pages on the LSE website as well as attend our workshops on the topic.

Gaining work experience as an Anthropology student

Work experience is a valuable way to explore career options, develop key skills, and build a strong CV. Many anthropology students gain valuable experience through volunteering, part-time work, and self-employment, but there are also a range of structured opportunities that can help you build professional experience and connect with employers.

Internships and Insight Programmes
Internships provide hands-on experience and can be a stepping stone into competitive industries. Opportunities to consider include:

  • LSE Summer Internship Programme – Exclusive to LSE students, this programme offers paid summer internships across a range of sectors, including NGOs, media, government, and consulting.
  • LSE Skills Accelerator – A structured skills development programme designed to help you build key competencies sought by employers, such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication, after which you will have the chance to secure a place on a two-week part-time team project with a partner employer.
  • LSE Optiver Skills Challenge – Provides an chance to build your digital skills.
  • Internships via CareerHub – A wide range of opportunities, including roles in research, international development, and social impact.
  • Virtual work experience – Through Forage, which is an online resource which offers virtual experience programs designed by leading companies.

Part-Time Work and Student jobs
Part-time work is an excellent way to gain transferable skills, develop professional experience, and earn money alongside your studies. Anthropology students may be particularly interested in roles such as:

  • LSE on-campus jobs – Paid roles within LSE, from administrative support to event coordination.
  • LSESU -
  • Off campus – Roles in tutoring and retail

For more information on Part-time work visit our webpage as well as view our top tips

Volunteering, Shadowing and Self-directed projects
Volunteering can help you build experience, develop new skills, and expand your professional network. Key opportunities include:

  • LSE Volunteer Centre – Connects students with charities and non-profits offering short-term and long-term volunteering opportunities.
  • External platforms – Check out external sites that advertise volunteering roles such as Do-It, Vinspired and TimeBank

Shadowing is great for providing insight into what someone does, by observing what they do. It can last from a day to a week or two but is not usually advertised so will need to be set up by you. See below for how to approach someone using speculative application technique.

Self-directed projects is another way of showcasing your interest and skills in a certain area. This can include things such as documenting your interest via blog writing or creating a portfolio of work. You may have your own small business or running a short-term charitable project.

Vacancy Boards and External Job Portals
If you're looking for opportunities beyond LSE, the following platforms can help you find work experience in relevant fields:

  • LSE CareerHub – Includes exclusive job postings, internships, and part-time work. Visit our resources online further information on CareerHub and other job opportunities.
  • External job boards – Websites such as CharityJob, Escape the City, and Idealist offer roles in international development, social research, and NGOs. Have a look at our list of job sites and vacancy boards

Speculative applications
At certain times of the year, and in some sectors, it can be difficult to find advertised roles—both internships and graduate positions. In these situations, it can be a good strategy to approach organisations even if they are not actively recruiting.

Many organisations do not offer structured or regular internships but may occasionally have project work you could support. They may also be open to unpaid work shadowing opportunities.

You can find guidance on how to approach organisations on our Speculative Applications webpage
