Visiting Fellowships

Visiting Fellowship Guidelines for the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa

The Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (FLIA) welcomes applications for Visiting Fellowships from a wide range of individuals. Visitors to the Institute come under four main categories:

Visiting Fellows: academics at Assistant Professor level, early career researchers, or non-academic practitioners of equivalent standing.

Creatives in Residence: academics and non-academics who work in or on the creative industry in Africa.

Visiting Senior Fellows: academics at Associate Professor level, or non-academic practitioners of equivalent standing.

Visiting Professors: Full Professors, or non-academics who have achieved prominence in public life or attained distinction in their profession.

We welcome applications from early career researchers and may consider senior professionals working in the public sector eager to engage with academia.

For successful appointments, the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa expects affiliates to make significant and substantial contributions to the intellectual life of the Institute and offer support to its various programmes in various ways. This may include the following:

  • A 1,000-word blog post to the Africa@LSE blog, WPS@LSE blog, or Hub for African Thought at least once per year. Please contact the Blog Editor Mark Briggs at m.a.briggs@lse.ac.uk

  • Deliver an internal Lunch and Learn seminar once per year.

  • Acknowledge affiliation to FLIA and LSE on all publications.

  • Find ways to connect your projects to the Institute either through collaborations with staff and students and/or proposing an event/workshop or other activity.

  • Get involved with the Programme for African Leadership through mentorship, coaching, and/or speaking at the Careers Transition Lab.

  • Participate as a panel speaker at the annual Africa Summit if expertise aligns to the Summit theme for that year (happens every March).

  • Deliver a public lecture (limited to senior visiting fellows and visiting professors).

  • Consider applying for research grants through FLIA.

  • Mentorship to Early Career Researchers from Senior Fellows and Visiting Professors.

Visitors will have access to a shared office space, and be provided with an LSE IT account and email address, as well as access to LSE’s library.

Visiting appointments are unpaid. Please note that the Institute does not reimburse visitors’ travel or accommodation expenses, nor does it provide secretarial assistance. Renewal requests will be considered based on the fellow's engagement with the Institute and the fit of future work outlined with the Institute's strategic priorities.

Visitors are required to use the exact visitor title when referring to their LSE affiliation in any written or electronic correspondence. We encourage fellows to promote their work and engage in public discourse about their research. However, we request they refrain from doing so on state-controlled media platforms.

How to apply:

If you are interested in becoming affiliated to the Institute please send your CV and a maximum one-page proposal outlining what work you would like to undertake during your time at FLIA and how it aligns to the objectives of the Institute to africa@lse.ac.uk. We will endeavour to respond to your query within two weeks.
