LSE academic Professor Mike Savage has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Since 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences has honoured excellence and convened leaders from across disciplines and divides to examine new ideas, address issues of importance, and work together. The first members elected to the Academy in 1781 included Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.
Professor Savage joins only eight other European sociologists who are Fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. These include Gosta Esping-Anderson, Jurgen Habermas, and Anthony Giddens (the only other British sociologist so honoured).
Professor Savage joined LSE in 2012 and was Martin White Professor of Sociology before retiring from the Department in 2024. He is now Professorial Research Fellow at LSE’s International Inequalities Institute, from where he retains active collaboration with the Department of Sociology.
He has long standing interests in analysing social stratification and inequality and has played a major role in the revival of the sociology of social class. He promotes the need for academic research to be co-produced with campaigning organisations and is committed to a public facing vision of sociology.
Commenting on his election to the Academy, Professor Mike Savage said: “It’s such a huge honour to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. I see my work as embedded in a rather old tradition, sparked by the British Marxist historians who inspired me as undergraduate, grappling with the dynamics of social class, inequality and long term social and political change. It’s therefore deeply humbling that the value of my work has been recognised across the Atlantic and is seen to resonate today.”
