Academic Mentor

At the start of term, all students will be assigned an Academic Mentor. Your Academic Mentor will:

  • Provide you with academic guidance and feedback on your progress and performance
  • Discuss any academic problems you may be experiencing
  • Provide pastoral support on non-academic issues and refer you, as necessary, to sources of support within the School
  • Meet with you regularly and maintain regular contact with you outside of meetings
  • One of the people who will write reference letters for you in future, so they must get to know you well

In Welcome Week, your Mentor will contact you to set up a meeting. After this initial meeting, you should arrange other meetings with your Mentor at least once or twice in each term. They will contact you to set up these meetings unless you wish to discuss something more urgently.

Mentors will be able to discuss with and advise you on a range of academic and pastoral issues. These can include: academic progress, course choices, deferrals, exams and personal circumstances. Academic Mentors are also one of the first faculty points of contact if you are facing difficulties with your studies. Academic Mentors will treat all information you give them with the appropriate level of confidentiality, although sometimes it may be necessary for your Mentor to discuss information with other relevant members of staff.

During your time at LSE, you will also have access to our Departmental Senior Student Adviser, who are here to support you throughout your degree. Your adviser will help you to navigate (alongside your Academic Mentor and other departmental colleagues) the advice and support services available to you and will assist with your wellbeing needs.

Note that your Academic Mentor is not responsible for assisting you with administrative problems. If something is wrong with your registration, timetable, etc., you should contact the Student Services Centre or Undergraduate Programmes Manager, Elvina Moonien.

If you feel that you’re not getting the most out of your academic mentoring or are considering requesting a transfer, don’t hesitate to speak to your MSc programme coordinator, Rebecca Batey or your BSc departmental tutors, David O'Sullivan (1st Year), Giacomo Zambelli (Maths w/a Econ Year 2 and 3) and Arne Lokka (FMS and MwDS Year 2 and 3 ).
