LSEE-CEFTA Academic Network

A new initiative by LSEE Research on SEE, LSE Enterprise and the CEFTA Secretariat seeking to encourage the production of new research on trade in the CEFTA region, as well as the facilitation of academic dialogue and knowledge exchange with the policy community.

The aim of the LSEE-CEFTA Academic Network is to support the production of high quality research on trade in the Balkans, by covering wider economic and non-economic issues, including in the field of legal studies, public administration and political science, as well as opening up and incorporating new research methods and research designs.

The Academic Network seeks to encourage collaboration and synergies across academics in the region, as well as engage - through research - more deeply with policy, not only in a ‘downstream’ fashion (i.e., communicating research findings to policy users), but also in the ‘upstream’ dimension (i.e., engaging with policy-makers at the stage of the design of policy measures).

CEFTA is a modern and comprehensive regional trade agreement, designed as an integral part of the Parties' pre-accession agenda and in line, where appropriat, with their commitments to the WTO. It provides a strong legal basis for policy formulation and implementation in key areas related to trade and investment. The CEFTA Secretariat, which was established in September 2008, has the role of providing technical and administrative support to the Joint Committee, the overall governing body of CEFTA.

LSEE Research on South Eastern Europe brings together the LSE's expertise on South Eastern Europe and provides a significant platform on which to build high quality, independent research and facilitate public dialogue, while disseminating information on the region. At LSEE we conduct research which is organized along three broad streams including (a) Social policy, regional policy and labour markets; (b) European integration, macroeconomic policy and institutional reform; and (c) International relations, minorities, security and state-building.
