The average person on the planet is losing about 2 years of life expectancy due to air pollution. It represents one of the greatest challenges that humanity faces. Despite greatly compromising people's well being and contributing to climate change it receives too little attention.

This event will raise the profile of this important determinant of human well-being and explore innovative ways to reduce it. To do this we will pair prominent academics and policy makers working on the frontline of the war on air pollution to help map a path forward for the world.

Meet our speakers and chair

Michael Greenstone is the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics as well as the Director of the Becker Friedman Institute and the interdisciplinary Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago. He previously served as the Chief Economist for President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, where he co-led the development of the United States Government’s social cost of carbon.

Namrata Kala is the W. Maurice Young (1961) Career Development Professor of Management and Assistant Professor in Applied Economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. She is an economist with research interests in environmental and development economics.

Muhammad Omar Masud is the CEO of the Urban Unit and a member of the Pakistan Administrative Service. His work at the Urban Unit, a policy and design think tank within the government, is focused on improving city responses to large challenges. Previously, he served as the Government of Punjab’s Additional Secretary of Finance, with over 15 years of diverse management experience in Pakistan’s civil service.  He holds a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in urban policy.

Liu Xin directs the Environmental Management Program at Energy Foundation China, aiming at accelerating the improvement of China’s air and water quality, and enhancing their synergies with climate change mitigation. Prior to joining the foundation in January 2019, he worked as the Deputy Director of the Regional Air Quality Management Division at the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, focusing on coordinated air efforts in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province that could help the region known as “Jing-Jin-Ji” fight smog. He is also the executive director of China Clean Air Policy Partnership (CCAPP) and Standing member of Ozone Pollution Control Committee at Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences.

Clare Balboni is Assistant Professor of Economics and STICERD Economics of Environment and Energy Programme Directory. She is an alumnus of LSE.
