A key competency developed during the Executive Master in Cities was the application of structured methodologies to complex urban challenges. While I had prior expertise in the implementation of electric buses and had extensively engaged with this topic in my professional career, the methodological frameworks acquired in the program provided a more rigorous, systematic, and multidimensional approach to analysis. These methodologies not only enhanced the analytical coherence of my recommendations but also facilitated a more comprehensive integration of diverse stakeholder perspectives, thereby strengthening the contextual relevance and applicability of the proposed solutions. This methodological rigor significantly enhanced the impact of the consultancy, ensuring that the recommendations were both technically robust and strategically aligned with Nairobi’s specific urban dynamics.
This consultancy project provided strategic recommendations to the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) for selecting a business model that would facilitate the implementation of electric buses on Line 2 of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The study addressed critical urban challenges, including traffic congestion, air pollution, and climate change, while also ensuring effective stakeholder engagement.
A key challenge in this project was engaging stakeholders unfamiliar with the subject. By applying methodologies learned in the Executive Master in Cities, I successfully facilitated stakeholder participation, ensuring the feasibility of recommendations. This experience reinforced the importance of context-specific solutions and collaborative approaches in urban mobility projects.
This process has influenced my way of thinking, placing great importance on understanding the unique dynamics of each city. While cities may face common problems that require common solutions, the "how" of implementing these solutions is highly dependent on the particularities of each city. For example, global warming is a common issue for cities and countries, with solutions that, by global agreement, should be implemented, such as electric buses. However, the way to implement electric buses depends on the specific context of each city. Hence, the importance of interacting with local stakeholders using appropriate methodologies.
As NaMATA has stated, this consultancy project is proving to be highly valuable in the implementation of electric buses on Line 2 of Nairobi’s BRT system. The methodologies applied can be replicated in similar projects worldwide, contributing to my expertise in electric bus implementation. Future consultants should select a topic they are passionate about and engage with organizations facing real-world challenges to maximize impact.
