Reframing Iraq: Power, Politics, and Paths to Inclusion

Hosted by the Middle East Centre

Marshall Building, LSE

Join the LSE Middle East Centre for PeaceRep Iraq's final conference 'Reframing Iraq: Power, Politics, and Paths to Inclusion'. This conference marks the conclusion of the PeaceRep Iraq research programme and presents five years of field-based research on governance, power, and political transformation in post-2003 Iraq.

The programme has examined how Iraq's political system operates through the muhasasa framework, electoral and judicial institutions, and the role of armed actors in shaping authority at national and local levels. It has explored the persistence of elite competition, patronage networks, and the challenges facing civic movements that emerged from the 2019 protests. Beyond institutional politics, the research addresses patterns of exclusion affecting minorities, displaced populations, and young people, alongside questions of educational investment, socio-economic inequality, environmental stress, and water scarcity. The conference also places Iraq within broader regional and international politics, including the conflicting interests of regional powers. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and partnerships with Iraqi scholars, the programme provides evidence-based analysis grounded in local knowledge and perspectives.

This public conference brings together researchers, policymakers, diplomats, and practitioners to discuss the programme's core findings and their implications for governance, accountability, and inclusion in Iraq. It asks: What does inclusive peace look like more than two decades after regime change? How can reform efforts address not just symptoms but the structural mechanisms that sustain elite capture? What roles should regional and international actors play in supporting meaningful political transformation? And how can research continue to inform policy debates on Iraq's future?

The conference programme and list of speakers will be added soon.
