Announcing the LSE Department of Law Centenary celebrations!

cent4

The year 2019 marks a century since the formal beginnings of a Department of Law at LSE (as opposed to the simple existence of law teaching, from the School’s very founding in 1895).

One of William Beveridge’s first acts when he became the Director of LSE in 1919 was to confirm HC Gutteridge in the Cassel Chair of Commercial and Industrial Law – the Department’s first full-time Professor of Law.

With this in mind, we, as a Department, welcome you to join us in celebrating 100 years since the formal beginnings of the LSE Department of Law.

How can you get involved in our centenary celebrations?

The LSE Department of Law Open House event

On 16 November, 6.30-8.00pm, we invite you to our open house event, taking place in the Lower Ground of the New Academic Building. Together, we will celebrate the centenary by revisiting pinnacle moments in history, that took place one hundred years ago, from a legal perspective, such as women’s suffrage and post-war treaty making.  Current students will Moot on a contentious topic, overseen by Sir Ross Cranston.  Our LSE Department of Law centenary timeline and biographies of staff, alumni and students will be exhibited.  LSE Law research will be displayed.  Tickets are available via Eventbrite here.
