Venezuela is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis. The UN High Commission for Refugees estimates 5,000 people per day are leaving the country through forced migration and more than 1.9 million have done so since 2015, placing strain on neighbouring countries who have given them refuge. The Venezuelan people face shortages of food and other basic supplies, the economy has been hit by a range of international sanctions and its government has been decried by the US administration as part of a 'troika of tyranny' amidst talk of military intervention against President Maduro. What does the future hold for this nation, and how will political and economic developments unfold? Professor Ricardo Hausmann, Director of the Centre for International Development at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, offers his insight and analysis.

Professor Ricardo Hausmann (@ricardo_hausman) is Director of Harvard's Center for International Development and Professor of the Practice of Economic Development at the Kennedy School of Government. He also teaches a capstone course on the MPAID program. Previously, he served as the first Chief Economist of the Inter-American Development Bank (1994-2000), where he created the Research Department. He has served as Minister of Planning of Venezuela (1992-1993) and as a member of the Board of the Central Bank of Venezuela. He also served as Chair of the IMF-World Bank Development Comittee.

Professor Andrés Velasco (@AndresVelasco) is the inaugural Dean of the new LSE School of Public Policy. Professor Velasco has an exceptional breadth of experience in a distinguished career spanning academia, policy and politics. He was the Minister of Finance in Chile between 2006 and 2010 and held professorial roles at the Harvard Kennedy School and Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. He has advised governments around the world and formulated policy at the highest levels.

The Latin America and Caribbean Centre (@LSE_LACC) opened in January 2016 to serve as a focal point for LSE’s research and public engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean, the Centre builds upon the School’s long and important relationship with the region.
