Film screening

The Department is running a film screening series, International History on Film, for its students this academic year.

The second film screening happened on 12 February 2019. We watched Selma (2014). The film portrays Martin Luther King’s march on Selma, Alabama, in 1965 to achieve equal voting rights for African-Americans. Watch the trailer.

After the film screening, there was a Q&A with Dr Imaobong Umoren.

The event was free and open to all International History students.

Free pizza and drinks were provided.

Dr Imaobong Umoren is Assistant Professor in Race and Gender History in the Caribbean in the Department of International History at LSE.

Department of International History (@lsehistory) teaches and conducts research on the international history of Britain, Europe and the world from the early modern era up to the present day.

Previous screenings

The Department ran the first film screening of the 2018-19 series on 13 November. The film shown was Paths of Glory (1957) by Stanley Kubrik, "arguably the best film about the first world war" according to The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw.

Set during World War I, the film is about a commanding officer of French soldiers who refuse to continue a suicidal attack on an enemy position, after which the officer defends them against a charge of cowardice raised by a general.
