Panellists in a variety of roles will discuss their work and how their background as economic historians has helped in developing this career. They will cover opportunities the civil service can offer, plus insights into the Fast Stream scheme application process.

Nathan Paterson

Graduated with a degree in Economic History with Economics in 2014 and is currently a policy manager within the Home Office’s Crime, Fire and Policing Group. To date here he has worked on the policing response to a No Deal EU Exit, the establishment of the National Policing Board, and the departmental and cross-government response to the COVID 2019 Coronavirus outbreak. He was previously on the Fast Stream programme which worked on disability unemployment policy strategy; marketing in the UK’s GREAT campaign to overseas buyers; a secondment to operational management in a NHS hospital and finally driving energy efficiency improvements in homes. Before joining government he worked in the private sector in management consulting with Accenture, and before then worked overseas in Kenya to deliver two micro-entrepreneurship programmes.

Ieuan Bennett 

Economist in the Central Analysis Unit at the Department for Education which he joined in September 2018 after graduating that summer with a BSc in Economics and Economic History. Works on short-term projects which relate to the Secretary of State’s priorities. Currently working on the government’s levelling-up agenda.
