What we offer

Our degrees are diverse, exciting, dynamic and contemporary and play a crucial role in contemporary policy.

My degree combined practical relevance with a global scope, and teaching that frequently challenged conventional wisdom

Social policy is concerned with real world issues such as poverty, social exclusion and global population change. It is about understanding and addressing social problems in society and examines the formation and implementation of policy, and how this affects people’s wellbeing.

Have you ever thought about:

- Why is inequality increasing?
- What kind of care do we need for our ageing population?
- What challenges does globalisation pose for social policies?
- What causes reductions or increases in crime?
- Who benefits and who loses from immigration?

All of these question are aspects of social policy. In fact, fields such as: education, housing, criminal justice, international development, social security and personal social services are all covered by the degree programmes. They allow you to concentrate on mainstream social policy issues, or combine a strong social policy interest with another central social science.

There are three programme options:

BSc International Social and Public Policy

Why does poverty still exist in the 21st century? What role does the welfare state have in people’s lives? Why is there still a gender pay gap?

Our BSc International Social and Public Policy explores some of the big questions we face in society around poverty, welfare, migration and gender equality. You’ll look at how social policies are formulated and implemented in industrialised societies, transition economies and the Global South, and explore the role of states, the nonprofit sector, financial markets and communities.

Drawing on LSE’s interdisciplinary strengths across the social sciences, you’ll study each topic from social, political demographic and economic perspectives – enabling you to develop a well-rounded understanding of these complex issues.

BSc International Social and Public Policy with Economics

On this BSC International Social and Public Policy with Economics, you’ll look at how different policy and economic approaches can help address social problems such as poverty and low pay. You’ll explore how the market economy affects people’s lives and the arguments for and against government intervention in different social policy areas.

You'll learn how different countries approach funding benefits, health and social care, education and social services. The programme assesses economic success at a national and international level (macroeconomics) and the interactions between firms, governments and individuals within countries (microeconomics).

This degree is taught by academics from two world-leading departments and you’ll benefit from the interdisciplinary study of social policy and economics.

This is a major/minor degree programme – with the main focus on social policy and economics as the minor component.

BSc International Social and Public Policy with Politics

As a society, social policies enable us to tackle big global issues such as poverty, welfare, equality and pay. Political thinking and decision-making from government, external agencies and even citizens all have a role to play in policy making.

This BSc International Social and Public Policy with Politics programme looks at the principles behind current and past social policies – such as the nature of private-public partnerships in health service provision and social security benefits. You’ll explore how different governments, politicians, organisations and voters propose, implement and sometimes block social policies.

Drawing on LSE’s interdisciplinary strengths across the social sciences, you’ll study each topic from social, political demographic and economic perspectives – enabling you to develop a well-rounded understanding of these complex issues.

This degree provides you with all the skills you’ll need for many different careers, such as parliamentary researcher, policy advisor, social worker or charity case worker.

This is a major/minor degree programme – with the main focus on social policy and politics as the minor component.
