About me

John Carrier taught in the Social Policy and Law Departments at LSE, and was Dean of Graduate studies. His main interests have been Social Policy Theory, and Health Policy and the Law. He has published articles in the Journal of Social Policy (with Professor Ian Kendall) as well as a history of the NHS ‘Health and the National Health Service’ (also with Ian Kendall) 2nd Edition 2016. He has also published (with Ian Kendall) ‘Socialism and the NHS’ and ‘Medical Negligence: Complaints and Compensation.’  Other Health publications include chapters on Community Care, ‘Asylum in the Community’ with Dylan Tomlinson, and ‘Positive Discrimination in the Allocation of NHS Resources’ in the Year Book of Social Policy (1977). His current research is on Convalescent Homes and also an analysis of the duties to the patient in the NHS.

For many years he has been active in the NHS, as the Chair of The Royal Free University Hospital Trust, then the Camden Primary Care Trust and more recently, the North Middlesex University Hospital Trust. He is now Chair of the North East London Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

He is also an Honorary Bencher at Lincoln’s Inn and Chair of the Inn’s Scholarship Committee, having previously served as a lay member on the Bar Standards Board as Chair of their Education Committee. In this role he was involved in the reform of post-graduate education for the Bar.
