Does speed improve justice? Fast-track courts and violence against women in India

Shaw Library, Old Building
Tuesday 24 March 2026 11am - 11.30am

Do specialised courts designed to deliver rapid judgements – particularly in cases of violence against women – improve justice delivery?

In India, ‘‘fast-track’’ courtrooms were introduced to speed up adjudication, including on cases of rape and child sexual assault. Dr Nirvikar Jassal’s talk looks at their impact on convictions, clearance rates and judge rulings. He explores the trade-offs between efficiency, resource allocation and meaningful access to justice for women.

Dr Nirvikar Jassal specialises on policing, crime, and criminal justice with a regional focus on South Asia. His research has utilised quasi-experiments, experiments, and machine learning to understand violence against women, hate crime, perceptions of law enforcement, and criminal justice accountability.
