Alex Voorhoeve and colleagues have published their new paper "Are we better at finding inconsistencies in our own moral case judgments or in others’ moral case judgments?" in Psychological and Behavioural Science.

In this open-access empirical study, the researchers find that we are indeed better at spotting apparent inconsistencies in others’ judgments.

One could conclude that people should become more self-critical. Instead, Alex Voorhoeve and colleagues suggest that this provides a reason to ask others to scrutinize our moral views. The search for moral consistency—even when it just concerns one’s own beliefs—is best thought of as a social endeavour.
