Prask Sutton (1998 Graduate)

Tell us about yourself! What did you study during your time with us, and what are you currently doing?

I studied M.Sc. History & Philosophy of Science. That was many moons ago, having graduated back in 1998, and I’m currently working in London in fintech, having founded and exited several startups of my own, as well as contributing to some of the most exciting new companies in the space.

In what ways has studying Philosophy influenced your professional life or shaped your career path?

The way I learned to think through studying Philosophy has been the single biggest influence on how I go about the work I do (designing and building products within tech) and the career I’ve had as a result. Being able to think critically is a skill honed by many subjects, but I don’t think I would have learned to think about the way I think to such an extraordinary degree had I studied anything else!

How has your Philosophy background set you apart in your field or helped you approach challenges differently?

It’s helped me understand the benefits of delving deeper into issues and not stopping at the first solution reached. Perhaps more importantly within the sphere of technology, it’s helped me value methodology alongside (and often over) technology itself. I feel that’s made a significant difference to how I approach challenges and build businesses.

What advice would you give to current or prospective students who are passionate about Philosophy but unsure how it might support their future career?

If you’re able to study something you’re passionate about, you’re already in an incredibly privileged position. I’d also reassure current and prospective students that studying Philosophy will also gift you the tools to not only succeed at your chosen careers, but more importantly to learn from failures and ascend to even greater successes. That intellectual mettle will stand you in good stead for the rest of your lives.

What’s one of your fondest memories from your time studying with us?

It has to be any one of myriad discussions late into the night at some haunt in or around Houghton Street. Being surrounded by so many people brimming with interest and ideas and a willingness to share and learn was infectious and what I always feel most nostalgic about when I find myself back in the area.
