Paul Rickard (2000 Graduate)
Tell us about yourself! What did you study during your time with us, and what are you currently doing?
I studied Philosophy & Economics and I am now CEO of Pocket Living, a London based developer of innovative housing solutions for City Makers
In what ways has studying Philosophy influenced your professional life or shaped your career path?
A very common theme across the successful people that I have met is intellectual curiosity. Always wanting to learn, to think, to challenge, and to grow. This is a natural extension of Philosophy where we are encouraged to challenge and learn. Whilst Philosophy hasn't directly influenced my path in to property, it has no doubt helped me to progress throughout my career.
How has your Philosophy background set you apart in your field or helped you approach challenges differently?
Philosophy supports inquisitiveness and an ability to critically consider proposals and arguments from both angles. Being able to critically assess options and opportunities is an invaluable tool for making informed and successful decisions as well as managing risk and avoiding the wrong decision.
What advice would you give to current or prospective students who are passionate about Philosophy but unsure how it might support their future career?
Training and encouraging the mind to think about arguments and propositions from different angles provides a skillset that is incredibly valuable in the marketplace irrespective of industry or seniority. These skills learned studying Philosophy can also be supported through choosing other optional modules in subjects that complement Philosophy, such as economics.
What’s one of your fondest memories from your time studying with us?
My fondest memory is simply meeting lifelong friends and connecting with like minded individuals who I am still in touch with today.
