Sarah Brierley is an Associate Professor of Comparative Politics. Her research focuses on the state, corruption, and electoral politics in sub-Saharan Africa.
Her new book – The Co-opted State – considers politicians incentives to control bureaucrats’ careers to undermine governance in order to deliver non-programmatic benefits to voters. She is the recipient of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, and is working on a project entitled ‘Political Finance in Africa’.
Dr Brierley’s research has been published or is forthcoming in the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, Electoral Studies and the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.
She received her PhD in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles.
