Matt is Assistant Professor in Urban Planning at LSE. His research examines the planning, development and governance of cities, with a focus on the politics of community development, the changing nature of urban expertise, and the digital transformation of planning systems.

His latest research project explores the growing role of AI in urban planning, examining its implications for professional knowledge, democratic decision-making, and the ethical principles that underpin the field.

His recent books include Critical Planning Futures: New Directions in Planning Theory (Routledge, 2025) co-edited with Phil Allmendinger and Mark Tewdwr-Jones and Digital Cities of Tomorrow: Planning in the Digital Age (Palgrave Macmillan, forthcoming 2027) co-authored with colleagues from UCL’s Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis. Matt’s research has featured in a range of academic journals, including Progress in Planning, Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space, European Planning Studies, and Territory, Politics, Governance.

Matt holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Sheffield and has been awarded fellowships from the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Academy, and the Leverhulme Trust. Matt is Viewpoints Editor at Town Planning Review and a Visiting Urban Scholar at the Boston University Initiative on Cities.
