Jessica Dempsey is Professor of Geography at the University of British Columbia, studying the the political economy of biodiversity loss and conservation. She has contributed to international policy through advisory and authorship roles with the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
With an MA and PhD from the University of British Columbia, Jessica's work seeks to understand why biodiversity loss persists despite scientific knowledge and policy commitments, and how political-economic institutions, from markets to global financial governance to states, can be transformed to move away from dynamics of extractivism and towards sustainable development.
