Thesis: 'Internal Migration in Authoritarian Regimes'

The thesis analyses internal migration and the imposition of restrictions upon it within authoritarian regimes. It begins by discussing the motivations and patterns of internal population flows, before constructing a formal model to explain the authoritarian government's willingness to impose such restrictions. I argue that the authority utilizes internal migration policies as a strategic tool to buy off either the elites or mass citizenry, depending on the specific circumstances. Finally, the thesis uses survey datasets to empirically examine the model's theoretical findings.
