Maths Support Centre

The Maths Support Centre provides supports for our students taking first year courses, and some second year courses. It brings course content and teaching staff outside the classroom to create a space where students can ask questions, receive direct support and study. (Subject to room availability)

All students at LSE are welcome to drop in to COL.2.01 for help with first year mathematics topics, whether they are currently taking these courses or would like to review the material.

Any LSE student who is currently taking, or has previously taken, one of the supported courses is welcome to drop in and ask questions. This may include students enrolled on these courses at present, as well as those studying more advanced courses who wish to revisit or strengthen their understanding of earlier mathematical material.

You can ask questions about any aspect of the course content supported by the Centre, including lecture material, notes, textbooks, homework problems or other topics that arise while studying these courses.

The Support Centre is there to help with individual queries or small group discussions. It does not offer general taught sessions or revision classes.

Yes, absolutely!

Time permitting, yes.

Not to the Support Centre. The Support Centre offers in-person support only. If you are still registered for a course, you can post any queries on the course forum on Moodle.

All sessions are led by experienced class teachers or faculty from the Department of Mathematics.

Student Peer Advisers (SPAs) are second and third year students who volunteer to attend some of the Maths Support Centre sessions. They offer a student perspective and can provide support with questions during the sessions.

While it is possible, several Mathematics teachers run sessions each week, so you may not always see your own teacher.

You do not need to book a place. You can check the rota on the Department of Mathematics Office Hours website.

As often as you need to.

Feedback

You will be asked to complete a short feedback form after your visit to the Centre. The form will ask for your degree programme, department, year of study, and the course number you have a query about. You do not need to provide your name.

Please take a moment to complete this feedback so that we can respond to your comments and suggestions.

Feedback from students who have visited the centre:

Really helpful! We sat at the table together with the professor. I not only understood how to solve my Q's, I also learnt a lot from other people's Q's..

Really good with walking me through the problem.

Very helpful in understanding how to progress with a proof.
