Academic Mentors

At the start of your programme, you will be assigned an academic mentor who will support you throughout your studies.

Your mentors will:

  • Provide academic guidance and feedback on your progress
  • Discuss any academic difficulties you may be experiencing
  • Offer pastoral support and refer you to appropriate services where needed
  • Meet with you regularly and maintain contact outside of scheduled meetings
  • Act as a future referee, so it is important to build a strong relationship.

Your mentor will contact you during Welcome week to arrange an initial meeting. You should then meet at least once or twice per term, although you can request additional meetings at any time.

Your mentor can advise on a range of academic and pastoral matters, including course choices, exams, deferrals and personal circumstances. They are also a key first point of contact if you encounter difficulties with your studies. Conversations are treated with appropriate confidentiality, although information may sometimes be shared with relevant staff where necessary.

In addition to your academic mentor, you will have access to your departmental senior student adviser, who can support your wellbeing and help you navigate the school's advice and support services.

Please note that academic mentors do not deal with administrative queries. For issues such as registration or timetables, contact the Student Services Centre or the Undergraduate Programmes Manager, Elvina Moonien.

If you feel you are not getting the most out of your mentoring or are considering a change, you can speak to your MSc programme coordinator Rebecca Batey, or departmental tutors.
