Funding for small-scale projects
The Research Director is happy to consider, on a rolling basis, application for funding for small-scale research projects. Funding is available for, inter alia, the following activities:
- Seed funding
- Organisation of research workshops and seminar series
- Research assistance
- Field trips
- Knowledge, exchange and impact activities
- Travel and accommodation to attend conferences and other academic events
- Fees to attend academic conferences
Grants of up to £5,000 are available. They can be combined with funding coming from other sources (including your individual research allowance and the discretionary funding granted to research groupings).
While applications for small-scale projects will be assessed on a rolling basis, it is expected that they will be submitted at the very least a month ahead of the date of the expenditure, in particular if it involves the organisation of an event. Ideally, you would be applying two months ahead.
The Research Director reserves the right to reject the application on grounds that the application has not been submitted sufficiently ahead of time and/or that it may not allow colleagues sufficient time for preparation.
Prior to submitting the application, please make sure that you read carefully the research Intranet guidance on costings and ethics.
Applicants are encouraged to consider issues of diversity when drawing up lists of speakers and workshop participants by, for example, ensuring an appropriate gender balance and, where the event is international in nature, including participants and speakers from the global south. Applicants may be advised to reconsider the application on this basis.
