Dr Jan Zglinski speaks to international media on the FIFA governance crisis
Dr Jan Zglinski has given a series of interviews over the past week on the turmoil engulfing FIFA, speaking to the BBC, LBC, Times Radio and Finland's YLE, among others. Initially sparked by the plans to sell off commercial rights to the World Cup, the row has raised questions about the leadership of President Gianni Infantino.
Dr Zglinski argued that the crisis is not simply about a bad deal or a bad president, but about the fact that FIFA is misgoverned. While Infantino's position has become difficult to sustain and his privatisation plans for FIFA have been shelved, Dr Zglinski cautioned that removing him risks changing little. FIFA still needs the structural reform promised a decade ago after the 2015 corruption scandal – better internal governance and more effective external oversight – neither of which materialised then, and neither of which is guaranteed now. He called on clubs, federations, players, fans, lawmakers and regulators to use this window to push for real, lasting reform.
