Thursday 21 May 2026

Lord Justice Rabinder Singh's recent public lecture at LSE, 'Substantive principles of public law: what happened after 1987?' (11 March 2026), has been cited in a High Court case (Sarvar Ismailov v Foreign Secretary). Mr Justice Saini, giving his judgment, noted 'As Singh LJ explains, it is a principle of statutory interpretation that general words in primary legislation will not be construed to confer power on the executive to infringe basic rights protected by the common law.'
