A leader of the criminal bar in England and Wales, Courtenay Griffiths KC, has died at the age of 69. He came to the LSE from Bablake School, Coventry, and graduated with LLB Hons in 1979. He had been born in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved with his family to the UK when he was young. After being called to the bar, he was legal assistant to the Police Committee of the Greater London Council, and then spent a year as a Revson Fellow, in the Urban Legal Studies Program at City College, CUNY. From 1985 he was in full time practice at the Bar, including a period as head of chambers at Garden Court. He became a leading criminal lawyer and appeared in notable criminal cases both here and abroad.
