2023 Autumn Term Week 1

In terms of events, this first newsletter takes us up to Reading Week (AT6).

Periodically we will be sending you a quick update, by email, of events and who they are for. For those of you on campus you should already see these events in your calendar via the Hub. For those of you studying abroad this year, we have included you in this circulation as there will be ‘news’ updates as well as events that might be open to all and if you are in town your attendance would be most welcome! If the event is a social event this will be followed up by an email from Maggie asking if you are attending and to let us know if you have any dietary requirements.

News items

Each year we offer a research internship for those returning from their year abroad. This year 16 students have participated in the 4-week scheme, researching topics such as humour, grief, leadership, populism, and public communication strategies. A great start to this year’s internship was that on the first day, we got confirmation that one of the articles produced last year has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Language and Intercultural Communication. Congratulations to Benedetta and Gerry for their first academic publication! If interested, we can share the article titled: Identity positioning work in conservative political discourse: a cross-cultural comparison.

Please check out our new look Moodle page the LSE Language Community, where you can find out how to practise your languages and meet fellow language learners. We are currently looking for volunteers to help run sessions – please fill in the application form in the Volunteer section if you are interested.

Please make sure to check your Hub calendar!

Coming in the next edition .

I’ve ordered a book I was going to use for this section. It hasn’t arrived and I’ve run out of time, next time, sorry!

We’ve built up quite a following via lselanguages. Please do follow us and whilst studying abroad send us your pictures (to Language.Centre.Teaching.Learning@lse.ac.uk) so we can all see what you are up to!

If you have not done so, download the Student Hub and follow the Language Centre channel, as well as your group, Language Centre BSc students 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23 or 2023/24.

Thank you for reading. We cannot promise to publish everything we receive, but if you do have anything interesting to share please pass this on to me for a future edition.

Manager, LSE Language Centre
