LSE retains #2 position globally for Geography in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026

The Department of Geography and Environment is delighted to announce that LSE has retained its position as second in the world for Geography in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. This year’s results reaffirm LSE’s global reputation for excellence in geographic research, teaching and impact, placing LSE just behind the University of Oxford in the international table.
The QS Subject Rankings evaluate more than 21,000 academic programmes worldwide and remain one of the most influential benchmarks of disciplinary performance. Geography at LSE continues to excel across the indicators used in the rankings, including academic reputation, employer reputation and research strength.
Professor Hyun Bang Shin, Head of Department, said:
“Maintaining our world-leading position reflects the collective achievements of our academic community. Our staff and students continue to push the boundaries of geographical scholarship and engage with some of the most pressing social, environmental and spatial challenges shaping our world today.”
LSE’s sustained high performance highlights the School’s and the department’s longstanding commitment to rigorous scholarship, innovative research and teaching that speaks directly to global change. Our community of students, staff, researchers and alumni continues to demonstrate the power of geography to inform policy, shape public debate and advance understanding across societies.
We extend our thanks to colleagues and students across the department whose work underpins this ongoing success.
