Justin Tang
I am a 23-year-old international student from China, currently pursuing MSc Finance & Risk at the department of Finance at LSE. I did my undergraduate degree in Mathematics with Economics at UCL.
What made you choose MSc Finance & Risk at LSE?
I chose MSc Finance & Risk because I recognised that today's financial landscape demands professionals who can think both qualitatively and quantitatively, and who understands the fact that risk is embedded in everything. History and the modern financial ecosystem have shown that risk-awareness is not optional, it is fundamental across all dimensions, which now permeates every corner of investment banks, financial institutions, and real-world businesses. This programme is exactly what I was looking for: a curriculum where you can tailor your studies to areas like M&A, or derivatives, or risk management, all grounded in a quantitative foundation that prepares you for this reality.
What are the highlights of the programme?
The partnership with Deutsche Bank is exceptional. Through exclusive practitioner seminars and networking events, we engage directly with senior bankers and industry leaders. These sessions offer invaluable insight into day-to-day operations and what it truly takes to succeed, along with recruitment opportunities unique to our cohort.
How is the MSc F&R programme helping you in your job search/career?
The LSE Finance Department's reputation opens doors immediately, and the curriculum is remarkably aligned with real-world practice. Case studies and deal analyses can be translated directly into interview preparation, giving you a depth of understanding that genuinely sets you apart from other candidates.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
If you are fascinated by how numbers become narratives and narratives become numbers, this programme is for you. Use every resource available to discover what excites you within finance, then pursue it relentlessly, competition is fierce, but F&R gives you the ideal launchpad.

What made you choose MSc Finance & Risk at LSE?
I grew up in Dhaka, surrounded by sharp contrasts between wealth and poverty that existed side by side. That environment made me restless to understand what drives financial outcomes, not just for firms, but for entire communities. After completing my BSc in Economics and Finance at Leeds with First Class Honours and the Dean's Prize, and then graduating with Distinction from UCL's MSc in Venture Capital and Private Equity with FinTech, I had built strong foundations in deal evaluation and portfolio strategy. However, during an investment banking internship where I worked on a £500,000 renewable energy investment plan and structured zero-coupon bonds, I kept being confronted with a question I could not fully answer: how do you rigorously quantify the risks embedded in these decisions? LSE's programme was the only one that married that level of quantitative depth with genuine institutional credibility.
A highlight of the programme?
The Deutsche Bank seminar series, which is exclusive to Finance and Risk students. Professionals from the bank present on topics directly relevant to what we study, and after every session there is a networking event where you can have candid, unhurried conversations with people who actually do this work day to day. It bridges the gap between classroom theory and industry practice in a way that no textbook or case study can replicate.
How is it helping your career search?
It has given me a precise technical vocabulary. In interviews, I no longer speak about risk in generalities. I can engage on capital structure optimisation, tail risk modelling, and pricing methodology with the specificity that front office roles demand.
Advice for prospective students?
Come with a question you genuinely want answered. The workload is demanding, and the students who get the most from it are those driven by real curiosity, not just career ambition.

What made you choose MSc Finance & Risk at LSE?
LSE’s high reputaion in financial industry and my interest in the specific risk field.
What are the highlights of the programme?
The programme’s design and 12-month duration offers us sufficient time to pursue career opportunities in the UK. I feel it is even more beneficial for students from China because we don’t have to juggle job applications and studies. We can take in-person written tests and interviews in China, and this happens usually in the autumn of next year.
How is the MSc F&R programme helping you in your job search/career?
The programme helps my job search in several ways. First, the LSE title itself is very helpful for passing the initial CV screening. In terms of academics, the finance knowledge I’ve gained has given me more confidence in technical interviews. Deutsche Bank seminars are also useful because professional practitioners always share real industry experiences and practical insights, which help me understand what companies are looking for. Besides coursework, LSE organises many alumni shares and career events. These activities allow us to talk with graduates and hear opinions and advice about different companies and roles. It’s a good way to build connections and get a more realistic picture of the job market.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
I’d suggest that Study Hard and Play Hard. LSE’s workload and assessments are not easy but challenging your ability of learning and applying. Taking every class seriously is necessary. Certainly, at the same time, London is a place gathering cultural treasures from all over the world. You’ll never be disappointed if you love plays, musicals, art galleries and films.

What made you choose MSc Finance & Risk at LSE?
I chose this programme primarily for LSE’s world-class reputation in the global financial sector and the programme's specialized focus on risk management. The curriculum offers a unique intersection of rigorous economic theory and practical financial applications, which I found essential for navigating today’s volatile market environment.
What are the highlights of the programme?
A definitive highlight is the collaboration with Deutsche Bank during the Lent term. This partnership allows us to work with real-world cases and data from the current financial intermediation system. Presenting our findings through group presentations not only deepened my technical understanding but also significantly sharpened my professional communication skills.
How is the MSc F&R programme helping you in your job search/career?
LSE provides an incredible support system for career development. I have benefited immensely from the tailored CV workshops and mock interview sessions offered by LSE Careers. Furthermore, the powerful alumni networking opportunities have granted me insights into various career paths, helping me build connections with professionals who were once in my shoes.
What advice do you have for prospective students?
My key advice is to strive for a healthy work-life balance. While the academic rigor at LSE is intense, it is vital to explore London, participate in social activities, and proactively pursue career goals. Aim for well-rounded development—don’t just master the models; build the social capital and personal resilience that will sustain you throughout your career.
