Capitalism: a global history
In his new book, which forms the basis of this event, Harvard academic Sven Beckert meticulously reframes the history of modern capitalism as a global story, one he begins in the port of Aden and traces to the present day: from the smallest street market and most local boat, to the global behemoths of the 21st century.
Beckert has spent more than a decade travelling the planet in search of the true, grass roots stories that define the systems that shape our daily lives. The history of capitalism is, he argues, one of the last euro-centric histories we tell, and this new book addresses puts forward a revelatory new narrative, vital for understanding the world in which we live.
