Giorgia Meloni’s populist formula failed

In a recent piece for Foreign Policy on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, our Visiting Senior Fellow Dr Marina Cino Pagliarello argues that her government has not been able to change the country’s trajectory, particularly on the economic front.

In domestic politics, Marina writes, Giorgia Meloni has used identitarian politics to consolidate support, but has not translated that political capital into structural reforms. More broadly, her leadership has been effective in shaping perception, much less in inducing substantive change, and she has often dominated less through strength than through the weakness of her opponents.
