This panel event will analyse the road to the FTA and its future from the perspectives of political economy, international trade law and business
The UK and Turkey signed a free trade agreement (FTA) in December 2020, almost simultaneously with the UK’s Trade and Cooperation agreement with the EU. The deal guaranteed the continuation of nearly £20 billion trade volume between the two countries. So what does the FTA between the UK and Turkey, as well as political commitments to it, mean for global trade and wider economic trends and alliances in the world? What are the expectations of the business community? What lessons can be learnt from this experience in rethinking and renegotiating Turkey’s Customs Union?
Pınar Artıran (@PinarArtiran) is an Assistant Professor, WTO Chair Holder and the Director of the Research Center on International Trade and Arbitration Law at Istanbul Bilgi University. Her research interests include international economic and investment laws, arbitration, EU competition, and trade laws.
Christopher Gaunt, OBE is the Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Turkey. Aside from his invaluable international business experience across a number of key sectors, he has been extensively engaged in developing relations and partnerships between Turkish and British businesses.
Robin Janvrin is an independent crossbench member of the House of Lords and was the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Turkey from 2015-2021. He previously served in the British Diplomatic Service and the Royal Household at Buckingham Palace including as The Queen’s Private Secretary, effectively her chief of staff.
Mustafa Kutlay (@mmkutlay) is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of International Politics at City, University of London. Dr Kutlay's research concentrates on comparative politics, political risk analysis, political economy, Turkish political economy, and politics of development in the global South.
Yaprak Gürsoy (@ygursoy) is Professor and Chair of Contemporary Turkish Studies at the LSE European Institute. Prior to joining the European Institute, she was a Senior Lecturer and the Undergraduate Programme Director of Politics and International Relations at Aston University. She was also a Senior Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford University and an Associate Professor at Istanbul Bilgi University.
Contemporary Turkish Studies focuses on the politics and economy of Turkey and its relations with the rest of Europe. The programme aims to promote a deeper understanding of contemporary Turkey through interdisciplinary and critical research, teaching and related public activities.
