LSE Training Manager Jeni Brown has received an FDM Everywoman in Technology Award for her work creating an innovative IT training programme at the School and providing students with the digital skills they need to be globally employable graduates.

The programme, first developed by Jeni in 2014, offers practical IT sessions and provides staff and students with specific IT skills as well as developing their confidence and digital and information literacy expertise.

Based on research that ‘on the job’ or informal learning makes up the bulk of effective learning, the practical sessions present participants with real world projects to solve. They are encouraged to use existing knowledge, explore and play with the software, collaborate with their peers, and use online research to find solutions.

This is then further supported and developed through student coaches/advisors and guidance on best practice.

The programme has been extremely successful with participant satisfaction at over 99% for two years running. With regards to knowledge retention, 100% of students who applied the learning within three weeks of attending the course, successfully applied the skills.

Recognised in the academic category, Jeni’s award is presented to a woman in academia who has made an outstanding contribution to technology and science and whose work has made or has the potential to make a significant long-term impact in STEM.

The FDM Everywoman in Technology judges recognised Jeni’s love for learning, but particularly praised her passion for teaching and her desire to help people use technology seamlessly in their daily lives.

Commenting, Jeni said: “I’m extremely proud of the engaging, innovative, and unique training programme my team and I have developed over the last five years.

“Having the impact of that programme recognised by this award and being considered a role model for women in technology is a real honour. I’m extremely grateful to my team – a group of creative, dedicated, and supportive staff and students who have driven my original vision forward – and to LSE and IMT, who provided the space and support for innovation and experimentation.”

The annual FDM Everywoman in Technology Awards uncover and celebrate the most inspirational women in technology working within STEM industries. This year’s programme focussed on celebrating and identifying role models to help inspire tomorrow’s world.
