LSE has achieved a 'First' in the People and Planet University League, which ranks UK universities on their environmental and ethical performance.
Overall, LSE was ranked 14th in the table, climbing from 26th place in 2015, and places LSE second in London and second of the Russell Group universities. It is the seventh year running the School has achieved a ‘First’ degree (a spot in the League’s top tier) - one of only six institutions to do so.
This result recognises LSE’s continued commitment to sustainability. In 2015-16 the School cut carbon emissions by 16.8 per cent compared with the 2005-06 baseline; installed £2 million of solar power, low-energy lighting and boilers across 10 buildings (which will cut carbon by 8 per cent); and committed to divest from coal, tar sands, tobacco and indiscriminate arms manufacturers.
LSE Director of Estates Julian Robinson said: "To be ranked the second most sustainable university in London and the Russell Group is a great achievement. This result demonstrates that we can achieve great results when the efforts of the School community are combined. The new Centre Buildings and Paul Marshall Building will also be key contributors to reducing our environmental impact in the coming years."
