The modern Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) is seen as a springboard for stimulating economic development and the EU accession agenda in the Western Balkan region and Moldova. But does it fit the “EU shoes”?

The history of CEFTA goes back to 1992, when the Visegrad Group saw the idea of closer economic cooperation as a route to EU accession. Based on the original idea, the modern CEFTA was signed between the Western Balkans economies and Moldova in 2006. Since then, CEFTA has been developing trade relations and economic cooperation among the Parties, expanding to new areas, increasing the competitiveness of the region and its integration into the European and global economies. What does CEFTA bring to the Parties? What is its role in the Parties’ EU accession path? Will CEFTA prepare the region to speak with one voice within the EU? These and other questions were discussed at the lecture delivered by the Director of the CEFTA Secretariat Emir Djikic.
