From Ostensible to Actual Media Plurality: an examination of content plurality in Greece's fragmented media system

CBG.1.02, Centre Building, LSE, United Kingdom

Greece ranks low in global media freedom indices despite having one of the EU’s most fragmented digital media landscapes. This presentation examines whether this quantitative pluralism translates into genuine diversity in content. Drawing on a comprehensive mapping of all Greek online media and its content, it empirically investigates how ownership shapes content diversity.

The talk presents the results of a research project funded by the Hellenic Observatory at the LSE, introducing LLM-based methods for comparing news content and a new comprehensive dataset on the Greek online media ecosystem. Together, these contributions shed light on the “paradox of media (un)freedom” in Greece and open avenues for further empirical research.
