The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has appointed Professor David Metcalf to a new expert panel of five “respected” economists, in a bid to improve its economics capability.

The Economic Experts Working Group will meet six times a year to help the ONS set its development agenda, and advise on issues such as measuring the changing economy.

Professor David Metcalf, Emeritus Professor at LSE’s Department of Management and Chair of the UK's Migration Advisory Committee, joins the panel alongside Martin Weale, former member of the Bank of England’s rate-setting monetary policy committee.

Jill Leyland, former vice president of the Royal Statistical Society, Thomas Crossley, professor of economics at the University of Essex and Peter Sinclair, professor of economics at the University of Birmingham also join the group.

The ONS announced the membership of its Economic Experts Working Group on Wednesday 17 August 2016. The organisation is the UK’s national statistical institute, with responsibility for collecting, compiling, analysing and disseminating economic, social and demographic statistics about the UK.
